A quick one done at the airport.
I'll tell you what I can't do. I can't wait for the new season of Lost to start.
For Pete's sake comeaaahhn already...

This one was just begging to be colored.
And really, why just look at colors when you could be eating them.

Banner-in-progress for a friend's blog.
It radiates a 30ft wave of pure, concentrated macintosh geekery. And it's resistant to fire spells.
A sneak peak of the coloring:

Um..I think this is purely video game nostalgia mishmash. What, you'd rather I say hodgepodge? Fine.

Sketching at the Stone zoo in Stoneham, MA. The black bears were definitely the highlight. I also underestimated how cold it was outside and despite fingerless gloves being great for drawing dexterity they suck at keeping you warm.

I have no idea what this is.
But it entertained me during a book meeting, so I'll just call it "notes."

Has anybody been watching Fringe?
I'm really starting to like where the show is going. Some great wacky science as well as some serious X-Files nostalgia going on. Also, John Noble plays a darn good mad scientist. Delightful.
(Seriously though, I'm still waiting for Lost....)

One of those drawings done at 2 am, never finished, and promptly forgotten about. If I were to take a guess, I would say it was some time during the olympics.
Now, I know what you're asking...
And the answer is yes. I do dress myself.

When insomnia strikes....
...I draw characters from Firefly on my iPod.
What?! Don't look at me like that.
Sunday, August 24, 2008
Well, it's happened. A flipbook animation app has been created for the iPhone and iPod touch.
It's like someone called me up and said "Lauren, do you remember all of those flipbooks about monsters, racing kangaroos, and exploding space aliens you used to make in middle school? You know, the ones that let you experience a small, yet fleeting smidgen of popularity from throngs of delighted onlookers? Well, today is your lucky day!" I downloaded the free trial version (Flipbook Lite) and although I'm not entirely in love with the interface just yet, I'd be lying out my bum if I didn't get the giggles from the small act of creating the illusion of movement. Sadly, the trial version is limited to a pathetic 10 frames, and one upload onto the web.
So, until I cough up the $9.99 for the full version, here is my one.
I just found this. From the looks of it, Kineo may win the usability category. I'll have to investigate further...

Development sketch for some album art...
Next go round will be "less monstery and more roboty."
It would make a fun t-shirt or somethin' though.

While watching No Country for Old Men.
Using the touch screen effectively is made all the more challenging by my big fat fingers.
Add snack food debris to the mix and I'm pretty much useless.

Ok, so I know I haven't posted in a while...but for good reason! I've joined the technology revolution and am now the proud owner of an iPod touch. Yea, yea, the Lauren you know and love...is getting techie.
I'll spare you all the geeking out over the device in general, but what I really have to spazz about is NetSketch. Now, thanks to this little app, what little attention span I had to begin with has been totally compromised by my newfound ability to create small colorful drawings on my iPod. This will be my undoing, mark my words. And what's great is that the software seems to be continually evolving to meet user's needs. Finer paint brushes? Yes, please. Eye dropper tool? Oh hellz yea. I can't wait to see what they come up with next.
Hold on, I gotta go twitter this.

Just a message to let you know that the blog is on a brief hiatus. I've been struck by some sort of mutant-flu strain that has me in a headlock and won't let go. As a result I've missed out on July 4th and the subsequent celebrations with family and friends (so sorry guys). I usually pride myself on my bulletproof immune system, but this virus got through somehow and now has the run of the place. Once I've a) unstuck myself from the bed sheets and b) gained enough energy eat something other than ginger ale I will hopefully be back to myself again.
This concludes our broadcasting day.

Nearing completion on the comic pages and it's almost time for color. Here's a rough panel of a fight scene before inking. It made my brain and hand hurt but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't fun to do. And I can now draw sub-machine guns. That's a lucrative skill, right?
Anyway, this definitely got me thinking about how much work goes into choreography in films, etc.
Check out this spectacular animated short from France (featuring another favorite subject of mine).
Steven Seagal would be proud.

I can't wait to ink and color this.
I really should get back to drawing the exploding helicopter on page 3 though.

Looks neat, but most likely an engineering deathtrap.
Really though, I could draw/design stuff like this all day long.
Also? I can't stop watching/rocking out to this.

'63 Ford Fairlane 500.
When I lived in Jamaica Plain, I walked by one of these every day on my way to the T.
I don't claim to have inherited my mother's encyclopedic knowledge of car models, but I know nice lines when I see them.

I'll be out in San Francisco for a few days.
Try not to make a mess of things while I'm away.

In preparation for the 4-page backup story I'll be doing for a future issue of Atomic Robo (published by Red 5 Comics) I'm trying to brush up on my skills in an attempt to look like I know what I'm doing.
More mucking about in future posts.
(edit: Robo looks so chunky it's not even funny. He must be pounding the hamdingers and hostess snack cakes or something. Eh, it was more of a coloring exercise anyway...)

So I went and saw Iron Man last weekend.
And then I went and saw it again on Tuesday. Because that's how much I enjoyed it. The movie was all-around enjoyable and it was really refreshing to see smart, witty dialogue and a solid story in a comics-based movie.
The ticket was a small price to pay for the two hour geek high I enjoyed after leaving the theater.
